"Controlling anger. There are times, however, when you simply cannot have something you want. It may be a material thing or it may not. Your parents, for example, may refuse to let you go on a hiking trip with your best friend. They have good reasons, but this is no consolation. You still want to go. What do you do? Do you cry or become angry? If you do, you are reacting to frustration exactly as a baby would.
Suppose, while you are feeling unhappy about the hike, that your little brother comes in and asks you whether you will lend him your ball or some other possession. Without stopping to think, you say angrily, "No, and stay out of my things!" Why do you speak so angrily! Are you angry at your brother? No, not at all. You are angry because you have been frustrated, and you are expressing your anger by displacing it, or taking it out on someone else. This is not a good way to handle frustration, either. A great many family fights start in this way." |
