Built around Sevänen's vibrant growling and an inspired guitar work, this album keeps intact in some way the link with death metal. Al the remanents of Insomnium's sound appears to have shifted towards a spectacular blend of gothic metal (the one in vogue in the mid-90s: Paradise Lost i.e.) and the vast harmonies of certain viking metal style (Moonsorrow, above all). All these elements together, make the sound of the group unmistakably Scandinavian. A mighty and thunderous whole album with no fillers straight to the painting of your deepest emotions! Song of the Blackbird and Lay the ghosts to rest best songs of the list.
