Description:Karl Amadeus Hartmann's opera, based upon Grimmelshausen's picaresque novel of the thirty years' war, has not been seen on stage or heard in concert in the UK. Yet it's one of the most important German operas of the 20th century; it was composed during the mid-30s, but couldn't be performed under the Nazis because of the unmistakable parallels it draws with the situation in Europe. (It was staged for the first time only in 1949.) Markus Stenz's fine performance - with an oustanding Juliane Banse as the naive shepherd boy, Simplicius, who finds himself surrounded by the horror, corruption and farce of war - was recorded in 2012 at one of Netherlands Radio's invaluable Saturday matinees, at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw. Like the BR Klassik recording of the opera from 2009, with Camilla Nylund in the title role, it uses the original version of the score, which is more unsparingly pessimistic and much more indebted to the principles of Brechtian epic theatre than the substantial revision that Hartmann made in the 1950s. Stenz and his cast capture that raw intensity very truthfully.
The CD "Simplicius Simplicissimus" features the acclaimed soprano Helen Donath in a powerful interpretation of Karl Amadeus Hartmann's opera, released by the renowned label Wergo. This recording captures the emotional depth and dramatic intensity of one of 20th-century Germany's most significant operatic works, based on Grimmelshausen's classic novel about survival during the Thirty Years' War. Helen Donath brings her celebrated vocal clarity and expressive nuance to this demanding role, supported by an outstanding cast and orchestra under expert direction. The album is a must-have for lovers of modern opera and those interested in German musical heritage. Helen Donath is an internationally recognized soprano whose career spans over five decades. She has performed at leading opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, and La Scala Milan. Known for her interpretations of Mozart, Strauss, and contemporary repertoire alike, she has received numerous awards including the title Kammersängerin in both Austria and Germany. Wergo is a prestigious German record label specializing in contemporary classical music since its founding in 1962. With a commitment to artistic innovation and high-quality production standards, Wergo has become synonymous with groundbreaking recordings from some of the world's most important composers and performers.
