With the release of EMPIRE OF THE UNDEAD, Gamma Ray finally reclaims the throne on the world stage of classic Power Metal. Following a world tour with Helloween, the band worked on the album for more than a year with producer and friend Eike Freese. At the end of 2013, while on tour, Gamma Ray saw themselves confronted with the misfortune of having their Hamburg studio destroyed by a fire. However, the band responded to this tragic event by doing what they have always been best at: 'Life is too good to stop and moan' claims Hansen and therefore quickly adds 'No one can stop us'. This message can most definitely be transferred to the new album as the title track of the record already proved Gamma Ray's sound is once again unstoppable and puts an irresistible heavy and fast approach to their classic sound.?&© 2014 Gamma Ray / Edel Germany GmbH. Alexander S. - 22/Aug/2019 Ageless in soul and voice, but in a prolonged creative crisis, Kai Hansen presented his fans a new work by Gamma Ray - a disc with the disturbing title "Empire Of The Undead". They decided to save money on the cover artist; an MRI image of a mustached grandmother in a scarf was enough. But the main thing, of course, is inside.
I must say right away about the quality of the recording - it’s even nothing! I must say, the musicians made conclusions from previous records and naturally burned their studio.
The album opens with the simply epic "Avalon" - wow, Kai challenged Rebellion in Dreamland himself! He threw and lost, but with dignity. The song is good, only it lacks some zest.
In general, the latest Gamma Ray discs, with the possible exception of "LOTF pt.II", have a very limited shelf life of 7-10 days from the date of opening. After this period, they are already so hackneyed that they do not have to return to them at all, with rare exceptions. Nevertheless, throughout the "expiration date" music very pleases the ear and raises vitality. This album was no exception. Yes, there are many potentially hit things that sound cheerful, playfully ... "Pale Rider" is the same, it sounds cool, but it's a cover of all Judas Priest songs combined ... The ballad "Time For Deliverance" is just makes instead of the title lines sing in the refrain of “We Are The Champions ...” Something went wrong with Kai’s ballads ... I consider “Hellbent” and “I Will Return” to be the best songs on the album. Songs from the fourth to the ninth can be called passing to some extent, but not boring.
In general ... The album is listenable. Recorded well. Sings great. Fans, of course, are advised. But the material has no historical and cultural value, so it quickly bothers.
Separately, I want to say about the two-disc edition ... Bonus tracks are so pointless ... Why did they even post them?
