Description:Expensive Shit by Fela Kuti, released 1 September 2014. This version of Expensive Shit comes as a 1xLP. The vinyl is pressed as a opaque disc. -
2014 vinyl LP pressing of the Afrobeat star's 1975 album. Nigerian police, seeking to put down this independent-minded rascal, tried to plant a joint on Kuti during a gathering at his home. Wise to their plan, he quickly swallowed the joint, but the police then threw him in jail to produce the evidence from his feces. He escaped charges with some wily plotting, and then produced this song mocking the police for wasting resources on hassling him instead of furthering justice in Nigeria. Opening brass rounds give way to interplay between Fela's narration about the episode and responses from his group of female singers.

"Expensive Shit" is a landmark Afrobeat LP by Nigerian bandleader and activist Fela Ransome Kuti*, reissued by Knitting Factory Records. Recorded at the height of Fela's creative and political powers, the album fuses hypnotic, extended grooves with sharp, socially engaged lyrics. Deep, interlocking rhythms of drums and percussion, earthy basslines and the unmistakable horn arrangements build a trance-like momentum, while Fela's call-and-response vocals and chant-like choruses turn each track into both a dance ritual and a political statement. The sound is raw, warm and organic, with long instrumental passages that invite listeners to sink into the groove and discover new details with every spin. As a vinyl LP, this edition emphasises the depth and physicality of the recording, making it ideal for collectors and listeners who value analogue presence and dynamic range in classic Afrobeat.

Fela Ransome Kuti* is widely regarded as the creator and most important pioneer of Afrobeat, a style that blends West African highlife and traditional rhythms with jazz, funk and soul. Across the 1970s he recorded a series of influential albums that changed the sound of African popular music and inspired generations of artists worldwide, from jazz musicians to hip-hop producers. Beyond his musical achievements, Fela became an outspoken critic of corruption and authoritarianism in Nigeria, and his lyrics and performances turned him into a pan-African cultural icon. Many of his records are now considered essential classics; "Expensive Shit" stands among the most celebrated for its combination of musical intensity and fearless social commentary.

Knitting Factory Records is known for carefully curated releases that spotlight distinctive and influential voices from around the world. With a strong focus on quality reissues and artist-driven projects, the label has earned a reputation for preserving important musical legacies while presenting them to new audiences with respect and attention to detail. Their editions often feature meticulous mastering and packaging aimed at both audiophiles and dedicated collectors. By handling the release of "Expensive Shit", Knitting Factory Records underlines the enduring importance of Fela's work and helps secure his place in the global canon of 20th-century music.
