Description:UK reissue. Willie Dixon's songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, but there is little doubt that Howlin' Wolf was the finest interpreter. His versions of 'Shake for Me', 'Back Door Man' and 'Spoonful', among others, helped to define the blues in the 1960s. Not for nothing has Howlin' Wolf regularly been featured in any list of the 100 Greatest Artists of all Time. This particular album, an eponymous collection first issued in 1962 (the original featured a rocking horse on the cover, leading to the album sometimes being called the Rockin' Chair Album) was a gathering of some six singles released on Chess Records between 1960 and 1962. It includes all three titles referred to above, as well as two titles written by Howlin' Wolf in 'Who's Been Talkin' and 'Tell Me'. for the most part, the musicians featured are Howlin' Wolf (vocals), Hubert Sumlin (guitar), Johnny Jones (piano), Willie Dixon (bass) and Sammy Law (drums), but whoever is playing, the quality remains constant throughout.
This album is sometimes called The Rockin? Chair Album, as mentioned for the master release.
"Howlin' Wolf" on CD by Howlin Wolf, released by Hallmark, is a collection that focuses on the raw power, grit and emotional depth of one of the most influential blues singers and guitarists of the 20th century. With his unmistakably rough, booming voice and driving grooves, Howlin Wolf shaped Chicago blues and laid an essential foundation for rock, R&B and modern blues. This CD brings together some of his key recordings in a compact format that is ideal both for newcomers discovering his music for the first time and for long-time fans who want an accessible overview of his sound. Expect earthy electric blues with strong rhythmic emphasis, intense vocal performances and a dense, urban atmosphere that captures the spirit of post-war Chicago clubs. The Hallmark CD edition places the focus clearly on the music itself, offering an affordable and straightforward way to experience the power of Howlin Wolf's recordings without unnecessary frills.

Howlin Wolf (Chester Burnett) is regarded as one of the giants of the Chicago blues. Active mainly in the 1950s and 1960s, he became famous for his commanding stage presence and a voice that could move from a growl to a haunting wail within a single phrase. His repertoire has inspired generations of musicians; many of his songs were later interpreted by major rock acts and helped to bridge the gap between blues and rock music. His influence can be heard in countless later blues and rock recordings, and he is frequently cited as a key reference point for singers and guitarists alike. A CD dedicated to his work is therefore not only a listening pleasure, but also an important piece of music history.

Hallmark, as the manufacturer of this CD, is known in the budget and reissue sector for making classic recordings available again in an inexpensive and accessible way. Instead of focusing on elaborate collector's editions, Hallmark emphasizes solid compilations that offer a clear, straightforward overview of the work of important artists. In the case of "Howlin' Wolf," this means a no-nonsense release that concentrates on the essential tracks and presents them in a practical CD format for everyday listening. This makes the Hallmark edition an attractive option for anyone who wants to expand their blues collection efficiently and discover or revisit the timeless sound of Howlin Wolf.
