Description:The Courage Of Others by Midlake, released 1 July 2013, includes the following tracks: "Small Mountain", "Fortune", "Children Of The Grounds", "The Horn" and more. This version of The Courage Of Others comes as a 1xCD. -
MIDLAKE, one of America's most successful and celebrated acts make their long-awaited return their extraordinary third album."The Courage of Others". It's ironic that Midlake's new album is titled "The Courage of Others" because, if anything, the courage is all theirs. Namely, the courage to do what feels right and stay true to the spirit of artistic independence whilst ignoring any pressure to conform to expectations. The result is the Texas quintet's third album, their most complete and beautiful body of work yet, best appreciated as a whole in the old-fashioned sense of an album - which makes perfect sense when you know Midlake linchpin Tim Smith's fondness for the look and feel of past times. So what's changed since the Trials of Van Occupanther, their second, hugely loved breakthrough album? Just as that record was in part inspired by the soft (er) rock of the early-to-mid 1970s - from Neil Young and America to Fleetwood Mac - so Midlake's new album also looks to a slightly earlier, and definitely British, trad-tainted folk sound. It may share the same gorgeously analogue-warm electro-acoustic template as Van Occupanther but it's a slower, darker and more carved record, both eerier and dreamier. Perfect, in other words, for it's February release date, at the height of winter. Neither do the new songs feature any hermit-scientists like Van Occupanther, or the mythical Roscoe. The songs that constitute the Courage of Others, Tim says, are closer to his heart than those of their first two albums because, "I don't feel I'm looking at the songs through someone else's eyes. I've tried to keep it as true to myself as I could." Guitarist Eric Pulido adds, "We didn't want to make the same album as Van Occupanther, so we carried on moving and creating and pushing for a newer sound and emotion."
Released in a standard jewel case with an 8 page booklet insert with lyrics and credits. Some copies had "Mojo - Album of The Month" sticker to front of jewel case. An almost identical version, but with slightly different artwork (bigger font) can be found here: [r20183518]. "Core of Nature" uses two lines taken from a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Produced and engineered in Denton, TX ? &© Bella Union 2010. Made in the EU.
"The Courage Of Others" is a critically acclaimed CD by the American band Midlake, released through the respected independent label Pias / Bella Union. Musically, the album weaves warm, analog-sounding folk-rock with subtle progressive and psychedelic influences. Acoustic guitars, flutes, gentle drums and layered vocal harmonies create an intimate, earthy soundscape that feels timeless and introspective. The songs are characterized by thoughtful, often melancholic lyrics that explore themes of courage, doubt, nature and the search for meaning in everyday life, inviting the listener to slow down and immerse themselves in a cohesive, atmospheric listening experience.

The production emphasizes organic instruments and a handcrafted feel, making "The Courage Of Others" ideal for listeners who appreciate albums that unfold as a complete journey rather than a collection of isolated singles. The arrangements are detailed but never overloaded, allowing each instrument and vocal line to breathe. This CD appeals in particular to fans of sophisticated indie-folk and classic singer-songwriter traditions, and works equally well as focused headphone listening or as a warm, enveloping backdrop for quiet evenings.

Midlake, formed in Denton, Texas, is known for its meticulous songwriting and its ability to create cinematic, mood-driven albums. With earlier releases, the band built an international reputation in the indie scene, mixing folk, rock and subtle 70s influences into a distinctive signature sound. Their work has resonated strongly with critics and dedicated music fans, earning them a loyal following and regular appearances at renowned festivals and clubs across Europe and the USA. Midlake are often praised for their rich arrangements and the emotional depth of their music, which rewards repeated listening.

The CD is released by Pias / Bella Union, a collaboration of two influential independent forces in the music world. Bella Union, founded by musicians, has become known for discovering and nurturing unique, artistically ambitious acts across a wide spectrum of indie and alternative music. Pias (Play It Again Sam) supports this with a strong European network, careful distribution and a clear focus on artist-friendly structures. Together they stand for releases that privilege artistic integrity over short-term trends. With "The Courage Of Others" on CD, Pias / Bella Union once again underlines its role as a label alliance that brings expressive, long-lasting albums to a wider audience.
