Patricia Barber's 1994 audiophile classic Cafe Blue is available for the first time unmastered, Capitol Studios remix. SACD Hybrid will play on all SACD and CD players.
Cafe Blue was recorded at Chicago Recording Company in early 1994 by recording engineer Jim Anderson. It was the first release Barber recorded for Premonition Records. Recorded in 16/48 kHz on a 32-track Otari machine, the original multitracks were then transferred and remixed in 2011 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California."Café Blue - Unmastered Capitol Studio Mix" on CD presents Patricia Barber's landmark album in a uniquely revealing form: the original, unmastered mix as it sounded in Capitol Studios, without later compression or EQ polish. This edition emphasizes natural dynamics, micro-details and room ambience, offering an intimate, "sitting-in-the-control-room" perspective that audiophiles and jazz-lovers treasure. Barber's blend of cool jazz, sophisticated harmonies and poetic, often noir-tinged lyrics unfolds with striking clarity: the piano retains its full tonal body, the bass sounds wooden and resonant rather than overly processed, and the drums breathe with lifelike transients. Iconic tracks from "Café Blue" gain a new sense of presence and depth, making this CD both an artistic and sonic reference. The minimalist packaging and purist concept underline that this is about hearing the music as close as possible to the moment of creation - a definitive way to experience one of the most acclaimed modern jazz vocal albums in a studio-true representation.
Patricia Barber is an American jazz singer, pianist and songwriter known for her intellectual, harmonically adventurous approach and her smoky, understated vocal style. Emerging from the Chicago jazz scene, she built an international reputation through critically praised albums and atmospheric live performances. "Café Blue" is widely regarded as her breakthrough and a modern audiophile classic, often cited by critics and used by hi-fi enthusiasts to test high-end systems thanks to its spacious, finely detailed recordings. Across her career she has received numerous awards and glowing press for pushing the boundaries between jazz, art-song and singer-songwriter traditions, establishing herself as a distinctive, influential voice in contemporary jazz.
The CD is released by Premonitio, a label associated with carefully produced, high-quality jazz and acoustic recordings with a strong focus on sound.
