Packaged in a jewel case with clear tray and 4-page booklet."Six" is a landmark live and studio album by the pioneering British jazz-rock and Canterbury-scene band Soft Machine, here presented in the CD format by specialist reissue label Talking Elephant. Originally released in the early 1970s, "Six" captures the group in a period of intense musical evolution, combining extended instrumental improvisations with intricate compositions that blur the boundaries between jazz, rock and avant-garde experimentation. The album is typically known for its two-part structure: one part recorded live, full of expansive, exploratory jams with shifting rhythms and rich keyboard textures, and one part studio-crafted, where the band's compositional finesse and sense of atmosphere come to the fore. Listeners can expect long, flowing pieces built around electric piano, saxophones and a nimble rhythm section, creating a hypnotic, cerebral yet emotionally resonant sound world.
This CD edition from Talking Elephant focuses on offering the album in an accessible, collector-friendly form for fans of progressive and jazz-rock. Talking Elephant is a UK-based label renowned for lovingly curated reissues and catalogue titles in folk, rock, progressive and related genres. They are known for keeping important albums in circulation, often with careful attention to sound quality and presentation, making it easier for new listeners and long-time fans alike to (re)discover key works from music history.
Soft Machine hold a central place in the Canterbury scene and in the development of progressive and jazz-rock. Emerging in the late 1960s, they evolved from psychedelic rock origins into an increasingly instrumental, jazz-inflected ensemble. Over the years they have featured prominent musicians such as Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean and others, and their classic run of albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s is widely regarded as essential listening for adventurous music fans. Soft Machine's influence can be heard far beyond their own era, inspiring generations of progressive rock, fusion and experimental artists. With "Six", the band document a mature, confident phase in their career, delivering music that is both challenging and rewarding, ideal for listeners who enjoy complex, exploratory sounds and the distinctive atmosphere of the Canterbury tradition. | | | No. of tracks: |
