Description:This is the first of two superb albums recorded by Bill Evans, and guitarist Jim Hall, and it was recorded over two sessions in April and May 1962. Arrangements simply for piano and guitar are rare in Jazz, and it is even more seldom that the results are truly inspiring and as musically worthwhile as in this case. It is usual for intuitive musical relationships to develop over a number of years, but here we find two musicians who clearly shared an immediate understanding. Both men are on absolute top form here - Bill Evans was on fire throughout the early and mid sixties, and after the tragic death of his previous musical partner, virtuoso bass player Scott Le Faro (at the age of 23), he was searching for new directions. Jim Hall is a guitarist of tremendous skill and powerful technique, with a highly developed rhythmic and harmonic sense that shines through on this album. What is so special about the performances here is an almost telepathic anticipation of where the music is heading - both musicians contribute equally, and there is a constant exchange of ideas, each reacting to the other with apparent ease, whatever the mood. This is a brilliant jazz album, of great depth and tremendous atmosphere, and both players express some exceptional ideas. Highly recommended. Recording: April & May 1962 at Sound Makers, New York, by Bill Schwartau -
"Undercurrent" on Vinyl Maxi brings together two of modern jazz's most sensitive and imaginative voices: pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall. This edition captures the intimate, chamber-jazz atmosphere of their legendary duo collaboration, focusing on subtle interplay, spacious arrangements and a deeply lyrical approach to improvisation. The sound is warm, transparent and detailed, allowing every nuance of Evans' floating harmonies and Hall's singing guitar tone to unfold. Ideal for late-night listening, the record moves between introspective ballads and gently swinging pieces, always with an emphasis on melodic beauty and emotional depth. As a Vinyl Maxi, this release offers audiophiles extended grooves and excellent dynamic range, making the quiet intensity and refined textures of the performance especially immersive on a high-quality turntable setup. A must-have for collectors of classic jazz piano-guitar duos and for anyone who appreciates understated virtuosity.

Bill Evans is widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz pianists of the 20th century. Known for his impressionistic harmonies, lyrical touch and highly interactive trio concepts, he helped reshape modern jazz piano and inspired generations of musicians. His work with Miles Davis, including the landmark album "Kind of Blue," as well as his own trio recordings, has secured him a permanent place in jazz history. Jim Hall, a master of subtlety and space, is celebrated for his warm tone, melodic clarity and sophisticated harmonic sense. He collaborated with many of the greats and played a key role in defining the modern jazz guitar sound, favoring thoughtful, conversational improvisation over sheer flash.

The manufacturer Dol is known for issuing classic jazz and blues titles on vinyl, often focusing on historically important recordings and making them accessible to a new generation of listeners. Their releases are typically aimed at collectors who value the tactile and visual aspects of vinyl as much as the music itself. With a focus on iconic sessions and timeless repertoire, Dol contributes to keeping essential works of music history available in the analog format, so that listeners can experience them in a way that closely reflects their original era.

"Undercurrent" in this Dol Vinyl Maxi edition therefore represents a carefully curated encounter with two giants of jazz in an intimate setting. For fans of nuanced, conversational jazz and for vinyl enthusiasts seeking a refined, atmospheric listening experience, this record is both a historical document and a timeless pleasure.
