Description:Composer: Various Orchestra: The Danish String Quartet Genre: Chamber Music Soloists: Fredrik Sjölin, Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, Frederik Øland, Asbjørn Nørgaard Instruments: Cello, Violin, Viola They are widely recognised as the most exciting young string quartet of the present moment, bringing new insights to contemporary composition and core classical repertoire. In parallel, they have also made surprising and impressive forays into the world of Nordic folk music. Their 2014 album Wood Works (Dacapo Records) was a left-field hit, and audiences around the world have been delighted by concert performances of the music. Now the Danish String Quartet bring their folk project to ECM with a stirring new recording. Fästan takes off from an unusual Christmas hymn, "Now found is the fairest of roses", published in 1732 by Danish theologian and poet H.A. Brorson. The hymn is set to a mysterious, dark melody: Brorson had chosen an old Lutheran funeral choral to accompany his Christmas hymn, elegantly showing how life and death are always connected. "From here we embark on a travel through the rich fauna of Nordic folk melodies until returning to Brorson in the end," say the DSQ. "It is a journey that could have been made in many different ways, but we believe that we returned with some nice souvenirs. In these old melodies, we find immense beauty and depth, and we can't help but sing them through the medium of our string quartet. Brorson found the fairest of roses, we found a bunch of amazing tunes - and we hope you will enjoy what we did to them." Tracklisting: 1. Despair Not, O Heart (01:51) 2. Shore (02:50) 3. "Last Leaf" is an LP by the Danish String Quartet on ECM Records that explores the rich musical heritage of Nordic folk traditions through the lens of contemporary classical string performance. With finely crafted arrangements of traditional Scandinavian melodies alongside atmospheric original compositions, the album unfolds like a musical journey through Nordic landscapes - from introspective, hymn-like pieces to vibrant, dance-inspired tunes. The quartet's trademark blend of technical brilliance, tight ensemble playing and a warm, organic sound makes "Last Leaf" both intellectually engaging and emotionally accessible, appealing to classical listeners and folk enthusiasts alike. Pressed on high-quality vinyl, this LP offers extended dynamic range and depth, allowing the delicate nuances of the strings, the subtle rhythmic shifts and the carefully sculpted acoustics to come fully alive, especially in quiet listening environments.

The Danish String Quartet has become one of the most acclaimed chamber ensembles of its generation, known for projects that connect the classical canon with folk roots. In addition to widely praised interpretations of Beethoven, Nielsen and other core repertoire, the group has attracted international attention and awards for its innovative "Folk" releases, which combine authenticity, virtuosity and a strong narrative sense. "Last Leaf" continues this trajectory, showcasing their ability to move seamlessly between centuries and styles while maintaining a distinctive, instantly recognizable sonic identity.

ECM Records, founded in 1969, is renowned for its meticulous production values, audiophile sound and carefully curated catalog spanning contemporary classical music, jazz and border-crossing projects. Often described as a label with a "signature sound", ECM places great emphasis on room acoustics, clarity and space, resulting in recordings that are both detailed and atmospheric. Over the decades, the label has worked with many leading composers and performers and has built a reputation for elegant artwork and cohesive album concepts. With "Last Leaf", ECM once again underscores its commitment to timeless, genre-defying music that rewards repeated, attentive listening.
