 | | Description: | As the spirit of the beehive front man Zack Schwartz puts it, Hypnic Jerks sounds like the state between wakefulness and sleep. The Philly quintet's third full length is named after the involuntary muscle spasms that can happen right as someone begins dozing off ... a perfect feeling to compare the album's drowsy-yet- restless character to. Unlike the spiraling momentum of the band's sophomore LP, pleasure suck, the spirit of the beehive takes a more grounded approach here, though the ground it's standing on is equally otherworldly. Dreamy is a fitting adjective, but the ten tracks on Hypnic Jerks never fully slip into the peaceful character of dream-pop. Hypnic Jerks has the quality of an indescribable dream fading from memory as you slowly begin to regain consciousness. Its warped guitar tones, transcendental synths and smattering of eerie audio samples conjure this purgatorial space between reverie and reality. It's an arena where the songs unexpectedly contort themselves and take on different textures, morphing in and out of one another. Once the celestial harmonies, balmy keys and creeping false climax of album closer it's gonna find you roll past, it's clear that the spirit of the beehive has secured a seat at this decade's table of musical visionaries. - As the Spirit of the Beehive front man Zack Schwartz puts it, Hypnic Jerks sounds like the state between wakefulness and sleep. Limited edition of 1000."Hypnic Jerks" is an experimental indie rock album by Spirit Of The Beehive, released here in the classic CD format and manufactured by Tiny Engines. Across its tracks, the band weaves together hazy dream-pop textures, fractured lo-fi collages and sudden bursts of noise-rock energy, creating a listening experience that feels like drifting in and out of sleep. Songs blur into one another with tape-warped transitions, field recordings and unexpected structural breaks, mirroring the disorienting, hypnagogic mood suggested by the title. Melodies surface briefly from dense layers of guitars, synths and samples, only to dissolve again into atmospheric soundscapes, inviting repeated, attentive listening.
Spirit Of The Beehive are known for their genre-defying approach to indie and alternative rock, blending shoegaze, psychedelia, slowcore and experimental pop into something distinctly their own. Over the years, they have built a strong cult following in the underground scene, praised for their adventurous songwriting, immersive album concepts and intense live performances. Their work is often highlighted by critics for its willingness to deconstruct song structures and for the way it balances abrasive noise with fragile, melodic passages, making "Hypnic Jerks" a particularly striking entry in their discography.
The CD edition offers the album in a durable, collectible form, ideal for listeners who appreciate full-length, front-to-back listening. With its carefully sequenced track order and cohesive sonic narrative, "Hypnic Jerks" is designed to be experienced as a complete work rather than a loose collection of singles. The physical release also appeals to fans who value artwork, liner notes and the tangible connection to the music that a CD provides.
Tiny Engines, the label and manufacturer behind this release, has been recognized as an important platform for independent and emerging artists in the indie and punk-adjacent scenes. Known for a curated roster and a strong emphasis on artistic integrity, Tiny Engines has helped bring a number of distinctive bands to a wider audience through thoughtfully produced vinyl and CD editions. Their reputation for quality packaging and for supporting experimental, boundary-pushing guitar music makes them a fitting partner for a project as idiosyncratic as "Hypnic Jerks". | | | Manufacturer No.: |
