Woody Shaw formed his second great quintet in late 1980 with Steve Turre, Mulgrew Miller, Stafford James and Tony Reedus. The band lasted only until July 1983, so every newly discovered recorded performance by them is a gem to be savored. The reason for the absence of Steve Turre in this concert is lost in time. But it gives us a chance to hear Woody in the challenging context of being the only horn in the group. He meets the challenge with breathtaking results. This is an essential performance in his legacy.Recorded live at Post Aula, Bremen, Germany, January 18, 1983.

Made in the EU"Live In Bremen 1983" is a CD release capturing an inspired concert performance by the Woody Shaw Quartet, documenting the trumpeter at a particularly creative stage of his career. Recorded live in Bremen in 1983, this album presents Shaw's highly distinctive approach to modern jazz trumpet: a powerful, burnished tone, advanced harmonic ideas, and rhythmically intricate phrasing. The quartet setting provides an intimate yet energetic framework in which extended improvisations, dynamic interaction and spontaneous dialogue between the musicians come to the fore. Listeners can expect a blend of swinging passages, complex modal explorations and lyrical ballad work, all shaped by Shaw's unmistakable musical personality. The live atmosphere--audible room acoustics, spontaneous applause, and the natural flow of the set--adds to the authenticity and immediacy of the recording, making this CD both a historical document and a vivid listening experience for jazz enthusiasts.
