 | | Description: | Virginia Woolf defied the false order of narrative conventions to depict a heightened, startling and poignant reality. Woolf Works recreates the synaesthetic collision ofform and substance in her writings. Each of the three acts springs from one of Woolf's landmark novels: Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves - but these inspirations are also enmeshed with elements from her letters, essays and diaries. Woolf Works expresses the heart of an artistic life driven to discover a freer, uniquely modern realism, and brings to life Woolf's world of 'granite and rainbow', where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. Woolf Works (2015) was Wayne McGregor's first full-length work for The Royal Ballet. "At it's creation in 2015, Woolf Works felt like a breakthrough for choreographer Wayne McGregor, adding a new emotional weight to his athletic force and fascination with technology. In this first revival, it's even stronger, with Alessandra Ferri luminous as the Virginia Woolf figure... It's a thoughtful, heartfelt performance in a ballet that is both intelligent and tender." (The Independent 4 Stars)'Since it's premiere in 2015, Wayne McGregor's first full-length ballet has won the 2015 Critics' Circle award for best classical choreography and the 2016 Olivier Award for best new dance production, while it's star, the fiftysomething ballerina Alessandra Ferri, has won an Olivier for outstanding achievement in dance. No wonder the Royal Ballet decided to revive Woolf Works as part of the celebrations marking McGregor's tenth anniversary as resident choreographer." (The Times 4 Stars)"Woolf Works" is a contemporary full-length ballet choreographed by Wayne McGregor, captured here in high definition on Blu-ray in a production from the renowned label Opus Arte. Inspired by the life and writings of Virginia Woolf, the work is structured in three contrasting acts that echo key novels and biographical moments, blending dance, music, text and visual design into an immersive, multilayered stage experience. This Blu-ray edition offers an opportunity to experience a major work of 21st-century ballet in outstanding picture and sound quality, preserving both the intimacy of the performers' expressions and the large-scale visual impact of the staging.
At the heart of "Woolf Works" is Wayne McGregor, one of the leading choreographers of our time, known for his intellectually ambitious, physically daring creations and his long-standing collaborations with The Royal Ballet. Over his career, McGregor has established a distinctive, highly kinetic movement language and has created acclaimed works for prestigious companies and stages worldwide. His productions often explore memory, identity, literature and science, and "Woolf Works" stands among his most celebrated narrative-inspired pieces, praised for the way it translates Woolf's stream-of-consciousness style and emotional landscapes into choreography.
The film features principal dancers and leading soloists of one of the world's foremost ballet companies, whose artistry and dramatic range bring Woolf's characters and inner worlds vividly to life. These dancers are internationally recognized for their technical excellence and their interpretations of both classic and contemporary repertoire, appearing regularly in major roles on the global ballet circuit. The creative team around McGregor includes highly regarded artists in fields such as set and costume design, lighting and video, who have contributed to numerous notable stage productions and whose work here creates a shifting, dream-like environment that mirrors the fluidity of Woolf's writing.
The music score is a central element of "Woolf Works," with a contemporary composer providing a rich, atmospheric sound world that intersects with archival sound and spoken word. This layered sound design helps carry the viewer through different time periods and psychological states, complementing the choreography's changes in pace and tone. Together, music and movement form a cohesive whole that has been widely noted for its emotional impact and its respectful but adventurous engagement with Woolf's literary legacy.
Opus Arte, the producer of this Blu-ray, is a specialist label in filmed performing arts and enjoys an excellent reputation for opera, ballet, classical music and theatre releases from leading houses around the world.
