Vinyl LP pressing. Anthoney Hart (who last appeared on Planet Mu as East Man) now returns under his Basic Rhythm alias with a new album 'On The Threshold'. Recorded primarily with the DJ in mind, these tracks are colourful, brutalist and adventurous. Contemporary hybrids constructed from blocks of sound, their angular rhythms draw on Britain's dance music past, but with an eye firmly on the present. The album starts with 'St. Fabian Tower', named after the now demolished tower block in Chingford where Anthoney used to DJ for Rude FM. The track's lush detuned synths and syncopated drums are girded by stern low end frequencies. Drum and bass, jungle and hardcore are the touchstones here, but the forms he creates make no attempt to imitate the music of those eras. Take the rolling, bubbling, almost jazz-drummer patterns of 'Yeah, I Like It' and 'I Want You' where strange pops and bubbles seem to be forced through the grid almost like they're an effect of pressure. It's an odd juxtaposition next to the soulful vocals but an effective one. 'Edge Of Darkness' meanwhile, is an intense, rough ride of sliding rhythms and elephantine bass. Elsewhere, like on 'A New Consciousness', things are tempered into a more streamlined techno-like hybrid. He let's loose in the claps and kicks banger of 'Fi Di Gyal', but even here there are neat sonic tricks that sound like nods to minimalist composition. On The Threshold is a balance of smart and energetic, non linear thoughtfulness and makeshift experimentalism that does away with boundaries, but is very much it's own self contained world.

"On The Threshold" is a full-length LP by Basic Rhythm, released on the forward-thinking label Planet Mu. On this album, Basic Rhythm explores the fault lines between UK hardcore, jungle, grime and contemporary club music, translating the raw energy of pirate radio and sound system culture into a sharply sculpted, modern form. Deep sub-bass, razor-edged breakbeats and fractured vocal samples collide in tense, cinematic arrangements that feel both nostalgic and futuristic, like walking through the echo of a rave that never ended. The tracks are built for the dancefloor yet rich in detail for focused home listening, with a strong narrative flow that pulls the listener from brooding atmospheres to explosive rhythmic peaks and back again.

Planet Mu, the label behind "On The Threshold", has long been a key force in experimental electronic music and cutting-edge bass culture. Known for championing adventurous artists across IDM, footwork, grime, jungle, ambient and beyond, Planet Mu has helped shape the landscape of left-field electronic music since the late 1990s. The label is respected for its meticulous curation and willingness to take risks, providing a platform for visionary producers whose work sits between club functionality and bold sound design. "On The Threshold" fits squarely into this tradition, embodying the label's mission to push genre boundaries while staying deeply rooted in underground UK dance music.

Basic Rhythm is the alias of a producer and DJ deeply embedded in the history and aesthetics of London's rave continuum. His work is marked by a strong connection to the early days of jungle, hardcore and grime, filtered through a modern, minimalist sensibility. Rather than simple nostalgia, Basic Rhythm dissects and reconfigures these styles, stripping them down to their essential rhythmic and emotional components. Through a string of acclaimed releases, he has earned recognition for crafting tracks that feel raw yet precise, combining rugged drums, impactful bass and carefully chosen samples into a distinctive, instantly recognizable sound. With "On The Threshold", he continues to refine this approach, delivering an LP that will appeal to dedicated bass music heads, collectors of contemporary electronic vinyl and anyone interested in the evolution of UK club culture.
