 | | Description: | Deluxe double CD & LP formats include unreleased demos & 1989 John Peel Session. On the eve of a post-Thatcherite Britain, the Pale Saints, alongside the likes of Lush, Ride and Slowdive, were ushering in a new wave of British indie. And in 4AD, they found a perfect home for their music - an exciting & undeniable meld of noise and dream-pop.
Their debut album, The Comforts of Madness, didn??t disappoint, now standing as one of the best of its era. Pitchfork placed it in their Best 50 Shoegaze Albums Of All Time saying, ??There??s a restless urgency, particularly when the volume swells and the rhythms intensify. That energy not only keeps (it) vital, it emphasizes Pale Saints?? inventiveness, how they channelled softness and rage into something distinctive.?
Nearly 30 years on and The Comforts of Madness is finally getting the reissue treatment. Having been remastered, a faithful LP repress on black vinyl is being released as well as double CD and double clear vinyl editions, both of which come with a bonus disc of previously unreleased demos and the band??s only John Peel Session, recorded in 1989. - Comes in a cardboard slipcase, printed inner sleeves, plus 12-page booklet featuring band photos, credits and artwork.
2-12 to 2-15 BBC John Peel Session recorded at Maida Vale 5 on 1989/07/23, first transmission 1989/08/17."The Comforts Of Madness - 30th Anniversary Edition" on CD by Pale Saints is a lavish reissue of one of the most distinctive dream-pop and shoegaze albums of the early 1990s. Originally released on 4AD, the record is celebrated for its ethereal guitar layers, hazy atmospheres and the fragile, androgynous vocals that helped the band stand apart from their contemporaries. This anniversary edition offers a renewed opportunity to discover (or rediscover) the album's dense yet melodic sound world: swirling guitars, reverb-drenched textures and songs that drift between abrasive noise and delicate pop hooks. Carefully remastered audio (where included) and the characteristic 4AD artwork aesthetic make this version particularly attractive for collectors as well as new listeners who want to explore a key release from the label's influential early-90s catalogue. As a complete listening experience, the album still feels cohesive and immersive, rewarding focused listening from beginning to end.
Pale Saints emerged from the UK indie scene at the turn of the 1990s and quickly became associated with the shoegaze movement, while retaining a more melodic, often more experimental edge than many of their peers. With "The Comforts Of Madness" they created their most enduring work, a cult classic that continues to be cited as an essential deep cut of the era. Though never a mainstream chart band, Pale Saints left a lasting impact on fans of alternative rock, dream-pop and noise-pop, and their debut album in particular enjoys ongoing reverence in music press retrospectives and among collectors of 4AD releases.
The 30th Anniversary Edition is released by 4AD / Beggars Group / Indigo, a constellation of companies known for their dedication to visionary independent music. 4AD, under the Beggars Group umbrella, has long been synonymous with groundbreaking artists and a strong visual identity, fostering acts whose work often becomes genre-defining rather than trend-following. Indigo, as a key distribution and label partner in the German-speaking market, is known for bringing important indie and alternative releases to a wider audience with care and consistency. Together, these partners ensure that this anniversary edition of "The Comforts Of Madness" is treated with the archival respect and attention to detail that a cult classic deserves, making this CD a high-quality addition to any serious alternative music collection. | | | Manufacturer No.: |
