Works By Bach |
 | | Description: | Leipzig 1723 is an album by Stefan Temmingh / Capricornus Consort, released in 2021. The album is a classical CD. - WORKS BY BACHThe Thomaskantor position in Leipzig was one of the most important jobs for musicians in Germany in the 18th century. Several important musicians applied to succeed Johann Kuhnau after his death in 1722. In the recruitment process, the Leipzig city council was able to choose from the most famous personalities of the time: The first choice was Georg Philipp Telemann, who declined, however, after he had obtained a decent salary increase at his Hamburg post. The next two candidates were Johann Friedrich Fasch and Christoph Graupner - Fasch, knowing about Telemann's application, had accepted another position and Graupner would have become Thomaskantor, but his employer in Darmstadt would not let him go. Only the third choice, as is generally known, fell on Johann Sebastian Bach... In his program "Leipzig 1723", Stefan Temmingh recalls this major moment in music history and presents recorder concertos by all four competitors. Excellently accompanied by the Capricornus Consort Basel, he thus creates a panopticon of recorder concertos by the greatest German masters of the time."Leipzig 1723 - Bach & his Rivals for the Thomaskan" is a richly conceived CD that immerses the listener in one of the most fascinating moments in music history: the appointment of a new Thomaskantor in Leipzig after the death of Johann Kuhnau. The program focuses on cantatas and sacred works by Johann Sebastian Bach and the composers who competed with him or were considered for the prestigious post, offering a vivid musical portrait of the stylistic diversity and theological depth that shaped early-18th-century Leipzig. Carefully curated repertoire and historically informed performance practice transform this recording into both a compelling listening experience and a sonic musicological exploration of Bach's artistic environment.
The performers - Dorothee Mields (soprano), Stefan Temmingh (recorder), Jan Borner (alto), Daniel Johannsen (tenor), Tobias Berndt (bass), Jörg Halubek (organ/harpsichord), Jochen Bär (cello/viola da gamba), and the Capricornus Consort Basel under the musical direction of Peter Barczi - bring this demanding repertoire to life with stylistic elegance and expressive sensitivity. Temmingh, Wienand and Barczi are recognized specialists in Baroque performance practice and work regularly with leading early-music ensembles and festivals; numerous acclaimed recordings, international concert tours and awards for their historically informed interpretations attest to their standing in the early-music scene. The Capricornus Consort Basel has established itself as a flexible and refined ensemble devoted to the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, consistently praised for its transparent sound, rhythmic vitality and nuanced phrasing.
The CD is released on Accent, a label known for its long-standing commitment to early music and historically informed performance. This album is ideal for listeners who wish to experience Bach not in isolation, but embedded in the rich context of his contemporaries and competitors. The juxtaposition of different compositional voices illuminates what made Bach's music unique while also rediscovering works that are less well known yet no less inspired. Whether as an introduction to the world of the Thomaskantor or as a sophisticated addition to an established collection of Baroque vocal music, this CD offers a compelling, artistically cohesive and intellectually stimulating journey into Leipzig's musical life around 1723. | | | Manufacturer No.: |
