Description:
Spielt Eigene Kompositionen is an album by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, released in 2023. The album is a classical LP. - .. KOMPOSITIONEN
"Spielt Eigene Kompositionen" is a vinyl LP presenting the deeply spiritual and introspective piano works of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru. Recorded with a minimalist, intimate sound, these compositions blend Ethiopian melodic sensibilities with elements of classical, liturgical and blues-inflected phrasing, resulting in a unique, meditative style that feels both timeless and intensely personal. The pieces unfold slowly and lyrically, often built around simple motifs that gain emotional weight through repetition, subtle harmonic shifts and an unhurried sense of space. This LP invites concentrated listening: the warm, unadorned piano tone and the quiet room ambience make you feel as if you are sitting just beside the instrument, witnessing private devotional music turned into an intimate concert. "Spielt Eigene Kompositionen" is ideal for lovers of contemplative piano music, spiritual jazz atmospheres and those interested in the rich, often overlooked heritage of Ethiopian music.
Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru (1923-2023) was an Ethiopian nun, composer and pianist whose work has, over the past decades, gained recognition far beyond Ethiopia's borders. Largely self-taught as a composer, she developed an unmistakable style that merges Ethiopian traditional modes with the vocabulary of Western classical piano, resulting in music that is both simple and harmonically sophisticated. Her recordings, many originally released in very small runs, were long treasured by collectors and have since become cult classics among fans of spiritual, experimental and global music. In recent years, reissues and compilations have introduced her to a wider international audience, establishing her as a singular voice in 20th-century piano music and an important figure in the story of Ethiopian music history.
The LP is released by Mississippi Records, distributed by Cargo.
