 | | Description: | ?Francesco Cavalli succeeded Monteverdi as the most influential composer of the new genre of opera that emerged in mid-17th-century Venice. Il Xerse is a fictitious dramma per musica that tells of Persian King Xerxes' love for Romilda, who in turn is in love with his brother Arsamene. The plot is an entertaining and extremely intricate human comedy of crossed loves, court intrigues and disguises - the work's popularity saw it staged in Paris at the wedding of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Spain. Since overshadowed by Handel's later Xerxes, this Martina Franca production is the first in modern times."Il Xerse" on Blu-ray by Dynamic presents Francesco Cavalli's baroque opera in a modern, high-definition edition that brings its intricate vocal writing, rich orchestral colors and characteristic blend of drama and comedy to life. This release focuses on musical authenticity and clear, detailed sound, allowing the refined continuo work and expressive arias to be fully appreciated. The Blu-ray format offers sharp image quality and carefully balanced audio, so that nuances in staging, costumes and performance practice can be experienced with immediacy in the home environment. With its focus on one of the key composers of early Venetian opera, this edition invites both specialists and newcomers to explore a cornerstone of 17th-century music theater. Dynamic, as a label, is known for documenting opera and classical repertoire with a special emphasis on lesser-performed works and historically informed productions; their catalog often highlights Italian opera from different eras, making this release a fitting part of their profile. The cast and creative team assembled for "Il Xerse" bring together experienced interpreters of baroque music and stage professionals versed in historically influenced performance. The singers in the principal roles draw on solid careers in early music, known for agile coloratura, stylistic awareness and the ability to combine vocal virtuosity with expressive acting, which is essential in Cavalli's often intimate, character-driven scenes. The conductor and musical leadership typically come from the specialist baroque field, with a track record of acclaimed productions of 17th- and 18th-century operas and concert works, contributing an idiomatic approach to tempo, ornamentation and balance between voices and instruments. Stage direction and design, created by artists with experience in opera and classical theater, support a reading that respects the historical roots of the piece while remaining accessible for today's audiences. Together, these performers and creators continue a body of work that includes successful appearances in major opera houses and festivals devoted to early music, helping to secure Cavalli's operas a stronger place on the modern stage. | | | Actors: |
