 | | Description: | The independently produced "Turn It Out" went on to sell an astonishing 65,000 copies, enabling Soulive to gain recognition in the jazz/funk scene. This is Soulive´s 1st full length CD recorded over the summer of 1999. Live + studio cuts featuring John Scofield, Oteil Burbridge and Sam Kininger. Guitarist Eric Krasno tends to dominate the proceedings. But his is a clean, clear sound derived from the soulful single-line strategies of Grant Green and George Benson. He's a sensational soloist who knows how to spice up a riff or expand on a melodic idea. Matching Krasno wit for wit is organist Neal Evans, once a student of the late Jacky Byard. He jumps out of the Jimmy Smith bag, only hinting that he comes from a place of tougher music, the study of scales and harmonic theory. But he doesn't rest easily in one place too long. Still, these three - guided in no small part by the expert rhythm-ning of drummer Alan Evans - make for one heck of a tight rhythm section. That's why the groove never gets boring.Mixed and mastered at Velour Studios, New York City

"Turn It Out" on CD captures Soulive's early, explosive blend of funk, soul, jazz and groove, presenting the band in full creative flight. Across the album, tight Hammond B3 organ lines, blues-soaked guitar riffs and crisp, deeply pocketed drum grooves come together to create an instrumental sound that feels simultaneously vintage and fresh. The tracks move effortlessly from laid-back, late-night atmospheres to high-energy funk workouts, always anchored by a powerful rhythmic drive and a melodic sense that makes each tune memorable even without vocals. Listeners who enjoy classic soul-jazz, acid jazz and groovy jam-band improvisation will find "Turn It Out" to be an engaging journey, equally suitable for attentive listening and as an energetic soundtrack for everyday life.
As a music article, this CD also offers an ideal introduction to Soulive as a band. Soulive are known for their organ-driven trio format and their ability to bridge jazz, funk and soul in a way that appeals both to traditional jazz fans and to a younger, groove-oriented audience. Over the years they have built a strong reputation as a formidable live act, collaborating on stage and in the studio with a variety of vocalists and instrumentalists from the broader funk and jam-band scene. Their tight interplay, improvisational flair and unmistakable groove have earned them a loyal international fan base and regular appearances at major clubs and festivals.
The CD format emphasizes the warmth and dynamics of Soulive's sound, allowing the nuances of organ, guitar and drums to come through in detail. "Turn It Out" is sequenced to flow like a live set, with tracks rising and falling in intensity to create a coherent listening experience from start to finish. It's a release that will appeal to collectors of modern funk and soul-jazz as well as to newcomers discovering the band for the first time.
