Fats Waller (Thomas "Fats" Waller, 1904-1943) gilt als Schlüsselfigur der Harlem-Stride-Pianotradition und wurde durch Plattenaufnahmen, Radioshows und internationale Tourneen zum Star. Kompositionen wie "Ain't Misbehavin'" und "Honeysuckle Rose" entwickelten sich zu Evergreens des Great American Songbook und wurden von unzähligen Künstlern interpretiert. Neben seiner pianistischen Virtuosität beeindruckte Waller durch sein Bühnencharisma und seinen augenzwinkernden Gesangsstil, der ihn zu einem der populärsten Jazzentertainer seiner Zeit machte. Seine Studio- und Rundfunkaufnahmen aus den 1920er- und 1930er-Jahren gelten heute als Meilensteine der Jazzgeschichte und beeinflussen noch immer Pianisten und Ensembles weltweit.
