 | | Description: | Volume 4 -Complete Record by Fats Waller, released 22 March 2022.
This version of Volume 4 -Complete Record comes as a 4xCD. - ..RECORDED WORKSIf you've encountered Volumes 1, 2 and 3 you'll know that Fats started life running and rarely slowed down. Born in New York in 1904, he showed early signs of the gifts that would sustain him throughout his career - musical skill and unlimited charm. Aged sixteen, he attached himself to the circle of James P Johnson, a leading stride pianist - and traces of the stride style would feature in virtually all Fats' work. He first recorded in 1922. For a time he was used as an accompanist for recording sessions before, in 1926, recording under his own name. From then until his death he was a star whose output and series of hits was unmatched. In 1929, Fats recorded what is generally accepted as the first jazz recording with a band composed of black and white musicians. Routine now, it was revolutionary then. By the time of the opening tracks here, Fats had married Edith, separated (she was in eternal pursuit of him for alimony) and had set up a new household with the more tolerant Anita. He was a leading recording star, appeared frequently on radio and was almost continually taking a show on tour. He had also appeared to good effect in a couple of Hollywood movies. His records sold in North America and throughout the free world. By September 1936, the personnel of Fats' band had settled onto the musicians listed in the discography. There would be few changes from now on. 1936 was spent mainly on the road. Fats was under financial pressure from the IRS and his ex-wife, Edith - it would be difficult to calculate who was the more formidable. In addition, his recording company was constantly pressing for more sessions. If this sounds like a treadmill, it was - justified by the fact that Fats was almost infallible in the recording studio - his bonhomie, invention and virtuosity rarely deserting him.1-1 to 1-5: New York, September 9, 1936.

"The Complete Recorded Works Vol. 4" on CD presents a further essential chapter in the recorded legacy of Fats Waller, one of the most influential jazz pianists, organists and entertainers of the 20th century. This volume gathers sessions from a specific creative phase of his career and offers a fascinating panorama of his art: stride piano brilliance, swinging small-group recordings and his unmistakable vocal charm. Listeners experience Waller's characteristic blend of humor, rhythmic drive and melodic elegance in carefully restored transfers that make the historical material as accessible as possible for modern ears. The CD is aimed at jazz aficionados, collectors of classic recordings and anyone wishing to understand how Waller helped shape the sound of swing and piano jazz.
Fats Waller (Thomas "Fats" Waller, 1904-1943) was a key figure of the Harlem stride piano tradition and became an international star through his recordings, radio broadcasts and tours. His compositions such as "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose" evolved into evergreens of the Great American Songbook, performed and recorded by countless artists. Beyond his virtuoso piano playing, Waller impressed with his charismatic stage presence and humorous vocal style, which made him one of the most popular jazz entertainers of his era. His recordings for various labels in the 1920s and 1930s are now considered milestones in jazz history and continue to inspire pianists and bands worldwide.
The label JSP (Jsp) has made a name for itself with extensive reissue projects, particularly in the fields of early jazz, blues and roots music. With carefully compiled box sets and themed series, JSP focuses on making historically significant recordings available in coherent, good-value editions for collectors and enthusiasts. The emphasis is typically on completeness of sessions, well-researched discographic information and thoughtfully remastered audio sourced from the best available material. "The Complete Recorded Works Vol. 4" follows this tradition: it is designed as a building block within a multi-volume series that documents the breadth of Fats Waller's recorded output and allows listeners to trace his artistic development in detail.
As part of a larger series, this CD is ideal for both newcomers and long-time fans: newcomers gain a compact, well-curated introduction to an important phase of Waller's work, while collectors will appreciate the chronological focus and the context within the complete edition. Whether you explore these tracks analytically or simply enjoy the irresistible swing and wit, this volume underlines why Fats Waller remains one of the truly timeless voices of jazz. | | | No. of tracks: |
